Icon is copy of the basic form of an Ethiopian Trinity in the cathedral of St Mary of Zion, Axum, Northern Ethiopia.
The influence of Ethiopian culture is immediately apparent in this version of the Trinity. But it is not so much the bright colours, the masculine appearance, or the dark skin to which I want to draw attention. Rather it is the way that the unity of the Trinity is expressed. The three persons are immediately apparent here, but there is no indication which is which. They are exactly alike and bound together by the one robe. It is said they are in council, though I prefer community, even communion.
